It requires a great amount of skilled craftsmanship and careful selection of hide parts in order to create a uniform coloration and smooth, unnoticeable stitching. Also to be noted is the rarity of hippo skin; in some periods it is simply unobtainable.
Hippopotamus Hide is available periodically: it is legally harvested under strictly regulated governmental supervision. All special skins comply with CITES requirements.
